Ashley & Rob are avid golfers and love weekend getaways to the Rockies, so it was totally fitting to shoot their engagement session where they feel most at home. We drove to Banff at 6am (super early for all of us haha) and started the session at the Banff Fairmont Springs Hotel where Rob proposed to Ashley (you’ll have to read more about their love story below!).

They really wanted to incorporate their love for golf for their engagement photos, so when the Kananaskis Golf Club said we could shoot on their golf course, we were so excited! Because they’ve been closed for the past couple of years while they’ve been renovating, we were one of the first to get an exclusive sneak peek of their new golf course!

Thank you, Ashley & Rob, for a fun day trip to the Rockies, and thank you, Kananaskis Golf Club for hosting us!

How did you two meet?

We met in 2011 while in the Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma program at NAIT

When did you start dating? Who asked who?

We officially started dating on March 28, 2012. After we had been seeing each other for a couple weeks Rob asked if it would be alright to call me his girlfriend, obviously I said yes!

Describe your first date. Did you know it would lead to more dates? A relationship?

We grabbed a pita from the Pita Pit in the HP Centre at NAIT between classes one day. I knew that I wanted to go on more dates with Rob after he had been completely un-phased by the lettuce I had all throughout my hair during our date as I talked his ear off.

Who proposed? How did it happen?

Rob proposed during a trip to Banff over May Long this year. Since we were only going to be able to stay for one night, he decided to book us at the Banff Springs Hotel (a major step up from our usual residence The Mountain View Inn in Canmore). They had a free ‘Paint Nite’ going on where you were invited to paint a mountain landscape (we opted to paint the one outside our bedroom window).

After, we went up to the hotel room to drop off our paintings before dinner. I propped the canvases on the window sill and went to freshen up before we left. When I came out, Rob asked if our paintings matched and when I turned around he was down on one knee with the ring box sitting between the paintings. The ugly cry started at that moment!

Definitely! After the crying stopped and the phone calls were made, we went to the Rundle Lounge in the hotel for some food and drinks. When we got back to the room we popped some champagne and just enjoyed the first evening being engaged.

How did you know he/she was the one you want to marry?

Ashley – I knew that Rob was the one I wanted to marry right around the one year mark. At the time, I was still playing hockey at NAIT and had no free time. From September 2012 to March 2013, our dates consisted of lunch dates at school during the week and Rob coming to watch my home games and occasionally travelling with my mom to my away games on weekends. He was the first guy that made it a priority to support me and he’s never stopped!

Rob – It’s hard for me to pinpoint the exact moment I knew but I’ve known she’s the one for a long time. It’s exciting that we are finally in a position to take this next step in our relationship, everything is finally falling into place.

How do you like to spend your free time together?

We enjoy golfing, sports, Netflix and long walks to the fridge.

What kind of adjectives would you use to describe yourselves as a couple?

Hilarious, sarcastic, united, family-oriented, committed and awesome.

Are there any quirks you like about each other?

Ashley – I love that Rob only lets his true colours show with our families and close friends. He’s the biggest goofball with the best dad jokes but you only know that once you’re ‘in’.
Rob – I like how Ashley is able to carry on a conversation with anyone because she’s so outgoing and friendly.

Do you have any memorable moments you’ve shared together?

There was this one time before we were even ‘seeing each other’ when I had forgotten my stethoscope and we were doing blood pressure in one of our labs. Rob and I had been placed in the same group with a few other people and he kindly offered to lend me his stethoscope. As he handed it over he said ‘You can only use this if you cleaned your ears this morning’. At this point I didn’t know Rob as being much of a comedian so it caught me completely off guard and I thought he was hilarious.

In a world where unfortunate circumstances & divorces occur, what makes you confident your marriage will survive its challenges?

Open communication, being best friends and continuing to pursue each other.

What are your goals & dreams for the future?

Raise a family, travel, and golf as many of the top rated courses as we possibly can! Ultimately we want to build a life we don’t need to take a vacation from.
