QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Ask me anything - I'm an open book!
HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?
I'm 100% self taught and proud of it! My background and degree is actually in interior design and I fell in love with photography shortly after meeting my husband, Andrew. He's the original photographer in our family and is the one who inspired me to get into it full-time!
DO YOU SHOOT MOSTLY CANDIDS OR POSED?
A mix of both, to be honest! I strive for documentary style photography, though sometimes direction and posing is required (like for family groupings and bride and groom/wedding party portraits). As much as possible, I like to be in the background documenting the day while occasionally stepping in to provide direction to get you the images you may not have otherwise received. For example, during the reception I really like to get fun party shots for you and will occasionally ask your guests to help me with this. Ultimately, my goal is for you to remember the most and best parts of your wedding day through the images I take for you!
WE'RE PRETTY UNPHOTOGENIC. WILL YOU HELP US WITH THIS?
I believe 100% that there are no unphotogenic people - just bad photographers!! HAHA. I will definitely help you be comfortable around me and my camera, and will direct you as needed! The only time I won't interrupt is during your ceremony or important moments with your loved ones. Otherwise, I'm available for direction, poses, and encouragement to help you look and feel your best!
WHAT IF WE CAN'T MEET YOU IN PERSON BEFORE THE WEDDING DAY?
No worries! I often don't meet couples until the wedding day anyways, so it's not a problem for me! I just ask for at least a phone call, if possible, prior to the wedding so we can touch base in addition to our email communication!
SHOULD WE BOOK ONE PHOTOGRAPHER OR TWO?
It's totally up to you, really! Some photographers insist on two shooters, whereas others prefer to work solo and I think it really depends on what you want/need for your wedding coverage. I've worked plenty of weddings alone, large and small, without missing any important moments, whereas other times it's easier logistically to have a second photographer. So it honestly depends on what you envision for your timeline and how we can make that happen!
WILL YOU HELP US WITH THE TIMELINE?
Yes! This is something we'll discuss during the consult and will give us a starting point and an idea of how many hours we might need to photograph your dream wedding! Whether you want full day coverage or just a few hours, I'd love to help you create the best timeline to capture all of your important moments and the extra in-betweens!
CAN WE PROVIDE YOU WITH A SHOT LIST?
To be honest, please don't! Aside from family portraits, I've found that most shot lists already include what I would've taken anyway and having to follow one prevents me from being able to do my job properly. I want to be in the right moments for you documenting what is truly going on, rather than reading off a list and missing important moments! So many factors go into creating an image and I'd rather personalize your wedding experience just for you rather than spending the majority of the day replicating somebody else's. Plus, you've hired me for my creativity! Trust me to make that magic with YOU.
DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE?
Yes, it's a must! If your venue requires it, let me know and I'll have my insurance company send the appropriate proof over.
DO YOU HAVE BACKUP GEAR? WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE?
I use Canon gear (5dmarkiv + markiii) with a variety of pro lenses and fast-writing memory cards to properly document your wedding. Shooting on dual slot cameras is a must for me, as it simultaneously records every image I take on both cards, and I make sure to carry backups of everything just in case!
WHAT IF YOU GET SICK OR CAN'T MAKE IT TO OUR WEDDING?
Unless I literally break all of my limbs and can't physically be present, I will be there for you! If in the unfortunate case of me dying, getting in a horrible car accident, or stuck in a hospital bed with broken limbs, I, or my grieving husband, Andrew, will make sure to find a replacement photographer for your wedding. We know and are friends with lots of talented and awesome wedding photographers so this won't be a problem!
DO YOU ATTEND REHEARSALS? WHAT IF YOU HAVEN'T PHOTOGRAPHED AT OUR VENUE BEFORE?
I don't attend rehearsals nor do I need to, but I'm happy to photograph it for an additional fee if you'd really like me to be there. I definitely familiarize myself with your venue beforehand though, whether in person or via online images, so regardless of where you are getting married, I make sure to come prepared! If you'd like my suggestions on ceremony set up or certain venue questions, I'm more than happy to help you with that!
HOW MANY IMAGES WILL WE RECEIVE?
Every wedding is different so it varies, but I'll usually deliver about 500-700 images for a typical 10 hour wedding, give or take a few! I don't cap how many images I'll deliver or leave anything out so you'll receive them all minus any duplicates, double chins, or half-opened eyes. If you'd like to see a full gallery of a real wedding, feel free to ask! I'm more than happy to share so you have an idea of what I normally deliver.
WHEN WILL WE GET TO SEE OUR IMAGES?
Within 10 weeks of your wedding depending on my current workload, though it's usually sooner than that! I don't ever want to rush editing your images because good things take time and your images deserve the best. Once they're ready, I'll send you a link to your online gallery where you can view, share, print, or download your images. You're welcome to share the link with your family and friends too!
CAN WE PRINT OUR OWN PHOTOS?
Definitely! I hope you'll enjoy your images as much as I loved creating them for you! Copyright stays with me, as per copyright law, but you're welcome to keep, print, love, and download your images once you receive them as long as they're for personal use! All I ask is that in lieu of watermarked images, that you please credit me as the photographer via a caption when sharing them on social media!
CAN YOU PHOTOSHOP US TO MAKE US LOOK THINNER OR HAVE BETTER SKIN?
It makes me so sad when people ask me this! To be honest, I'd rather not use Photoshop to create unrealistic images of you, especially if it involves altering the shape or look of your bodies. I'd rather spend that energy helping you feel beautiful in real life! As for removing blemishes, I'm happy to clear up a few here and there as needed, but just ask you to please not rely on my editing skills to fully replace makeup or a proper skin care routine. (I mean this with love because Photoshop is actually very time consuming when you consider the number of images to be edited!).
CAN WE PURCHASE OR SEE THE RAW FILES?
RAW files are like if an amazingly talented chef just gave you the ingredients without the recipes or equipment for you to recreate the beautiful dishes you've been loving and waiting to enjoy. Likewise, RAW files are not available for purchase or viewing because you've hired me for my experience, including my post-production skills and I believe in delivering a finished product! (Plus, it's super cost-prohibitive to purchase RAW files at industry-standard rates). If you're worried about your photographer potentially not delivering certain shots or images, I encourage you to choose one you can trust to care about you as a couple, rather than a job, because this will likely ease any concerns you may have of who you hire!
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE DO WE NEED TO BOOK YOU?
As ASAP as possible (hands up if you're a Michael Scott fan)! In all seriousness, once you lock in your date with me, this allows me to turn down any other inquiries I may receive for the same date, so I do recommend the sooner the better! I book as far as 18 months out for weddings and as short as 2 weeks notice for elopements, so it really depends on each couple. As a general rule, I recommend booking at least a year in advance for your choice of dates!
HOW DO WE SIGN THE CONTRACT AND PAY THE INVOICE?
It's all done online to keep things super convenient and environmentally friendly! I actually don't even own a printer nor do most of my clients, so doing it all online just makes the process simpler and quicker for everyone!
WHICH FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
E-transfers are preferred but you're welcome to pay via credit card directly on your invoice, if you wish! Please note I do not accept cash or cheques.
DO YOU OFFER PAYMENT PLANS?
Totally! I'd hate for finances to get in the way of hiring me for your dream wedding, so please contact me if you'd like to set up a payment plan for your wedding photography.
WHAT IF WE WANT TO UPGRADE/DOWNGRADE A COLLECTION?
Totally doable! Maybe you want to add more coverage down the road or decide you don't really need the second photographer or couple's session - as long as you give me enough notice and the date is still the same, I'd be happy to modify your collection for you.
WILL YOU GIVE US A DISCOUNT IF OUR WEDDING IS DURING THE OFF-SEASON?
Weddings are the same amount of work regardless of when it is, so I do not offer special or discounted rates for certain months. Good news is that you'll receive the same level of experience and quality as my other clients regardless of when your wedding is!
WILL YOU PHOTOGRAPH OUR WEDDING FOR FREE IF WE FLY YOU SOMEWHERE SUPER COOL?
That's super risky so I'll have to pass! I do travel for weddings however, and often provide an incentive for destination weddings (like an adventure session or longer wedding day coverage), so if you like my work and want to fly me somewhere super cool, let me know and I'd be happy to create a personalized collection for you!
