Christy & Beau have never been to Elk Island before, and I’m happy we were able to make their very first visit a memorable experience for them. We decided on this location because of the lake view and it was far away from the city that we could enjoy a clear skyline. It would’ve been foolish for us to take their pictures near the bison, but one was totally hanging out right in the parking lot of Astotin Lake where we were! What surprised Andrew and me the most was that their dog, Juno, could care less there was a bison (which was probably a good thing, hahaha).

There was a slight chance of rain, but we luckily didn’t get poured on, which gave us the perfect evening to create these beautiful engagement photos!

Your names & ages: Christy, 33 & Beau, 36
Occupations: Christy is Business Analyst and Beau is a Senior Strategy Manager (both at TELUS)
Current relationship status: Engaged!

How did you two meet?
We met at work (TELUS). Beau was facilitating a workshop and I was one of the participants.

When did you start dating? Who asked who?
Our first date was a week after the workshop wrapped up. We had been talking over email and text since the workshop ended and Beau asked me out!

Describe your first date. Did you know it would lead to more dates? A relationship?
We had drinks on Whyte Ave. We both knew right away that this was something very special. Something that neither of us had experienced before.

Who proposed? How did it happen?
Beau proposed to me in Mexico (April 2017). It was our first time in there and we booked a romantic dinner for two on the beach. Beau said he wanted to get a picture of the two of us with the sunset in the background. We got up to pose for a picture (with the waiter as our photographer), but instead of snapping a pic, he started taking a video while Beau turned to me and began a heartfelt speech before getting down on one knee in the sand and asking me to marry him!

Was the proposal a complete surprise? How did you celebrate after?
No, only because I am the hardest person to surprise. Beau was acting secretive and nervous in the time leading up to the event so I clued in a little bit. But that’s not to say I wasn’t shocked! He had my dream ring designed and I couldn’t believe that the proposal was happening in real life. We celebrated with dinner and drinks on the beach followed by calling and messaging family and friends (and sending them pics of how it all played out).

How did you know he/she was the one you want to marry?
Christy: There is a scene in the movie Practical Magic where Sandra Bullock’s character (as a young girl) casts a true love spell on herself so that she’ll never die of a broken heart. She dreams of a guy who doesn’t exist – because if he doesn’t exist – she’ll never die of a broken heart. Years later, as a grown woman – she meets this man in real life, proving true love does in fact exist. Beau is this man for me.

Beau: I never wanted to settle for someone that didn’t feel like the right person for me. It took 34+ years, but when I met Christy – she was the person I had been waiting for. I knew what I was looking for in someone and I didn’t find all of the qualities and beauty until I met her. If I hadn’t met her – I’d still be looking for her.

How do you like to spend your free time together?
We love to capitalize on our free time by keeping our schedules clear and unwinding from the hustle and bustle. Our dog, Juno, is the light of our life and is always by our side no matter what.

What kind of adjectives would you use to describe yourselves as a couple?
Christy: Beautiful, considerate, magical

Beau: Passionate

We both find each other extremely funny.

Do you have any memorable moments you’ve shared together?
The engagement in Mexico! We also took a trip to Grand Cayman to celebrate Beau’s brother’s wedding in 2016. And we bought our dream house together in August 2016. Also… Beau once gave me a Boston Crab and almost broke my back. Ever since then I’ve been working on brushing up my wrestling skills!

What has been the biggest struggle you’ve faced as a couple?
My (Christy’s) Dad was diagnosed with ALS and passed away after difficult battle with the disease in April 2016. Beau was my pillar of strength during this time and was my biggest fan the day of the funeral (when I had to deliver the eulogy to 100+ people).

In a world where unfortunate circumstances & divorces occur, what makes you confident your marriage will survive its challenges?
We both come from similar backgrounds and share the same values and goals for the future. That being said, we also have differences that balance each other out so we’re constantly learning and growing. We have our fights for sure, but they always end right away with affection and humour – no matter how much we want to put those wrestling techniques into practice!!!

If you were stranded on an island:
We would eliminate a lot of stressors in life! I would work on my tan and Beau would build stuff.

What are your goals & dreams for the future?
Our 5 year plan includes: 1-2 kids! a Tesla, a lakefront cabin, and our dog, Juno!
